This is TED, Where the ‘D’ Stands for Design
TED: Technology, Entertainment, Design—Ideas Worth Spreading
TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, and Design, reflecting its origins as a conference that brought together experts and visionaries from these three fields. Since its founding in 1984, TED has expanded its scope to include a vast array of topics, from science and culture to business and global issues, all with a singular mission: to spread ideas that can change the world. Today, TED has become synonymous with innovation and inspiration, serving as a global platform for thought leaders and changemakers to share their ideas through compelling, short-form talks. Each TEDx event, independently organized around the world, carries this legacy forward by showcasing locally curated content that embodies the essence of TED’s founding vision—bringing transformative ideas to the forefront of the global conversation.
Partnering with TEDxChicago this year as their first-ever Creative Agency Partner was more than just a collaboration for ArtVersion team—it was an opportunity to reshape the way design can impact an event’s reach and resonance. For an organization built on ideas worth spreading, TEDxChicago recognized the need for a cohesive design system that could elevate its presence and provide a richer, more engaging experience for attendees. The results were nothing short of transformative: about a 20% increase in attendance, heightened audience engagement, and an amplified visual narrative that set the tone for a truly memorable event. This was the first year where they opened additional seating at the theater’s mezzanine.
TEDxChicago’s decision to enlist ArtVersion as their Creative Agency of Record stemmed from a desire to not only improve the event’s aesthetic but also to create a unified identity that resonated across all touchpoints—physical and digital. This new partnership meant more than just creating visuals; it involved building a comprehensive design system that could translate the event’s theme, “Lighting the Way,” into an experience that audiences would connect with on a deeper level.
With offices in both Chicago and its surrounding suburbs, ArtVersion has established a strong presence in the region while maintaining a global reach. Despite having a distributed team, many of us proudly call Chicago home, making it the ideal base for partnering with local organizations like TEDxChicago to support initiatives that inspire and elevate the community.

Crafting the Design System: Unifying Theme, Expanding Reach
The key to creating such a high-impact design system began with understanding the essence of TEDxChicago and its mission. ArtVersion worked closely with the TEDxChicago team to translate the core message into a visual language that was both engaging and accessible. From the event booklet and signage to digital and social media assets, each element was designed with a consistent visual narrative in mind, ensuring a seamless experience from first interaction to final applause.
This cohesiveness did more than just make the event look polished; it created a stronger connection with the audience, fostering a sense of anticipation and excitement even before attendees stepped into the venue. The robust design system became a tool for storytelling, guiding attendees through each presentation, and providing context that deepened their understanding of the ideas shared on stage.
Driving Attendance and Engagement
One of the most significant outcomes of this collaboration was the measurable impact it had on attendance and engagement. The enhanced visual identity made the event more attractive to new audiences and returning attendees alike. With a more cohesive and compelling presence across digital channels, TEDxChicago was able to expand its reach and draw in a wider demographic.
By implementing a design system that unified all aspects of the event’s communication, ArtVersion helped TEDxChicago maintain a strong, consistent presence that appealed to a broader audience. From the moment registration opened to the final speaker’s talk, every element reinforced the event’s identity, resulting in an impressive 20% increase in attendance. The new design system not only captured the interest of more attendees but also created a more immersive experience that encouraged active participation and engagement.
Creating Lasting Impact: More Than Just Aesthetic Appeal
The success of this year’s TEDxChicago goes beyond numbers. The new design system served as a foundation for building an event that was both visually striking and emotionally resonant. By creating a cohesive aesthetic that tied together the speaker presentations, digital assets, and print materials, ArtVersion ensured that every touchpoint reflected the event’s values and vision.
Dustin Huibregtse, Director and Lead Curator of TEDxChicago, shared, “It has been a dream collaboration, truly elevating the design and experience we deliver—everything from the booklets and badges to our digital and social presence. This is TED, where the ‘D’ stands for Design. Earlier this year, we hosted a design event, diving deep into what design means for all of us. ArtVersion, thank you for being such an incredible partner.”
The impact of this unified design approach was felt throughout the event. Attendees remarked on how the visual elements enhanced their understanding of the topics, making the complex ideas presented on stage more accessible and engaging. The design system became an integral part of the event’s success, not merely supporting the content but actively elevating it.
Looking Ahead: A Blueprint for Future Success
ArtVersion’s work with TEDxChicago demonstrates how a well-crafted design system can transcend traditional visual communication and become a strategic asset that drives tangible results. The increase in attendance is a testament to the power of strategic design and its ability to amplify an event’s impact.
This partnership sets a new standard for how design can influence and shape the success of large-scale events.
